Barrier-free travel in the Brandenburg Lake District A new sense of freedom

The Brandenburg Lake District is part of one of Europe's largest contiguous water areas, located between Berlin and the Baltic Sea – here you can feel the freedom and slow down. Hundreds of crystal-clear lakes, gentle streams and thousands of kilometres of interconnected waterways criss-cross the region. A houseboat holiday is possible here even without a boat licence – the lake district invites you to drift along mindfully.

Varied natural landscapes combine tranquillity and unspoilt nature: several nature parks, the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve and the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site Grumsin Beech Forest form the backdrop for special nature experiences. In the certified Kyritz-Ruppiner Heide Star Park, guests can enjoy unforgettable views of the evening sky.

The lake district welcomes everyone: accessible houseboats, a passenger ship with a wheelchair lift and adapted canoes invite you to enjoy carefree days on the water. On land, you can experience nature by hand bike, electric quad bike or horse-drawn carriage. Therapeutic riding is also offered. Guests can hear the most beautiful stories from trained nature and landscape guides.

The Brandenburg Lake District also has a rich cultural heritage: Prussian palaces and their gardens, such as those in Rheinsberg and Oranienburg, are reminders of the splendour of bygone times, while the UNESCO World Heritage Site Bauhaus Bernau and the Niederfinow boat lifts are examples of architectural and technical masterpieces. Along the Havel River and the historic Finow Canal, industrial culture tells a story – particularly impressive examples of which can be found in museums and theme parks like the Ziegeleipark Mildenberg (Mildenberg Brickworks Park) and in the Familiengarten Eberswalde (Family Garden Eberswalde).

Last but not least, literary tradition and craftsmanship characterise the region: Theodor Fontane found inspiration for his ‘Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg’ (Walks through the Mark Brandenburg) around his birthplace Neuruppin, and Rheinsberg ceramics and Hedwig Bollhagen ceramics are now internationally renowned. Eberswalde spritz cake has become an indispensable part of the local cuisine.

A special feature for people with limited mobility is the four-star ‘Seehotel Rheinsberg’ hotel: hardly any other hotel in Germany has been designed so consistently to be barrier-free.
