Saxon Switzerland - Elbsandsteingebirge

The beauty of Switzerland in Germany

If you wanted a holiday by the sea, you're about 100 million years too late....

the romantic Elbe Sandstone Massif emerged from the sea in the Cretaceous period. Even the artist Caspar David Friedrich beat you to it by 200 years. Don't worry though, the romantic scenery is still here. Only the sea has gone.

Saxon Switzerland offers just the right mix of nature, entertainment and fun for an ideal holiday. The remarkable scenery in our region has captivated nature lovers and romantics from around the world for hundreds of years. There are countless things to do here, from the tranquil to the nerve-jangling. Climbers might head for the sandstone table mountain and long line of crags, while walkers can head for the hills riven with deep valleys and sheer gorges. Saxon Switzerland's dense network of trails and the Elbe Cycle Way provide wheelchair users with plenty of attractive routes and there are lots of places to stop for a snack or meal, not to mention countless places to stay the night.

When you've had your fill of fresh air, Saxon Switzerland's vibrant little towns have cultural attractions galore for you to enjoy. You could follow in the footsteps of Canaletto and stroll around the historic market square in Pirna, for example. Neustadt is also worth a visit, with its blend of ancient and modern. Visitors to Sebnitz, known for silk flowers, can tour the workshops and see how artificial flowers are made. Step back in time and relive the myths and legends of Saxony in its romantic castles and palaces, such as Königstein Fortress and Grosssedlitz Baroque Garden. Many places provide special facilities for visitors with restricted mobility, reduced sensory abilities or learning difficulties.

Unwind, relax and recover from an energetic day's sightseeing at one of our impressive spa centres. Kneipp hydrotherapy and other treatments are available all over Saxon Switzerland whose delightful spas and health resorts set in idyllic scenery benefit from the mild climate and therapeutic springs. Bad Schandau, Bad Gottleuba-Berggiesshübel and the health resort of Rathen have long been renowned spas and they have recently added ultra-modern medical facilities to their range of health amenities. Perfect for indulging both body and mind.
