The long history of the Franconian Lakes is brought to life wherever you visit, offering the perfect opportunity to explore the past. Some 2.000 years ago, the Romans occupied the Franconian Lakes region where they erected a huge boundary wall to protect their empire. This was the Limes, a modern-day UNESCO World Heritage site and Europe's largest archaeological monument. Remains of the wall are particularly prominent in Weissenburg, Gunzenhausen, Ellingen, Burgsalach and Theilenhofen.
