Magdeburg, the regional capital of Saxony Anhalt and a city of some 235,000 people, is happy to acknowledge the two famous Ottos that have shaped its history: Otto the Great, Holy Roman Emperor, and the other Otto von Guericke.
Otto the Great was extremely enamoured with Magdeburg and bestowed a magnificent cathedral upon the city. Otto von Guericke – famed for the Magdeburg hemispheres, which he designed to demonstrate air pressure – was Magdeburg's mayor and played a decisive role in the city's history after the Thirty Years' War. Ottostadt Magdeburg has preserved its cultural heritage and combined this with the vitality of a modern urban centre.
This ancient city is well worth a visit at any time of the year. It can boast a multitude of attractions, a colourful history spanning more than 1,200 years, a broad programme of arts and entertainment, plus great shopping and spas.
Magdeburg also lives up to its popular description as the leafy cathedral city on the Elbe, thanks to its superb parks and long riverside meadows that are perfect for long walks, cycle tours and picnics. The riverside urbanisation has been gentle though, and the Elbe remains a natural, unspoilt waterway here
Cathedral
With parks as far as the eye can see, Magdeburg is one of Germany's leafiest cities. The city's green open spaces range from historical gardens dating back to the nineteenth century, such as the Klosterbergegarten or the Herrenkrug parks, to modern Elbauen Park – where there is lots to do and lots to see, including the spectacular Millennium Tower. Magdeburg is popular with fans of Friedensreich Hundertwasser. The great Viennese artist bestowed upon Magdeburg one of his finest architectural projects – the GREEN CITADEL. With courtyards that you're free to wander around, a hotel, cafés and lovely little shops, this is Hundertwasser as an immersive experience. Daily guided tours and on-site information give you even more of an understanding of the artist's work.
Magdeburg is a town shaped by two famous Ottos. A glance across the river Elbe at the 800-year-old Gothic cathedral is a modern-day reminder of the special place that Magdeburg occupied in Otto the Great's heart. It was he who founded the city's first cathedral and made Magdeburg an archbishopric. Otto von Guericke, the second great Otto in Magdeburg's eventful history, also shaped the era in which he lived. You can find out lots more about him at the Otto von Guericke Museum in the Lukasklause tower on the banks of the Elbe.
